Any Roy Harper fans?
What were some of your favorite albums/songs?
I'm listening to 'Bullinamingvase' right now, and I had forgotten just how great this album is!
His earlier material was brilliant, and 'The Sophisticated Beggar' is a folk rock masterpiece.
Roy was aided on his 1969 album 'Flat Baroque and Berserk' by Keith Emerson, Lee Jackson, Brian Davison, and Davy O'List, of 'The Nice'. They played on a couple songs on that LP, but it was the track 'I Hate the White Man' played with just an acoustic guitar and Roys haunting voice that set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Roy was heavilly influenced by Bob Dylan, this much is obvious...but Roy took it to a whole new level!
Led Zeppelin were huge fans, hence the song 'Hats Off to Roy Harper', as were Pink Floyd. That's Roy singing on 'Have a Cigar'.
Any other fans of this folk/rock icon??
You betcha."Bullinamingvase" is my all time favourite.. on my 3rd copy now..Page and McCartney etc still contribute to it."I Hate The White Man" from African apartheid days is still a classic.."Stormcock" and "When An old Cricketter Leaves the Crease" is indispensible also.."The Green Man" released in 2002(?) shows he still hasn't lost his venom concerning the W.T.O et al..Roy is an icon and sings what he means and means what he sings..I guess in a way that's the difference between music today and yesterday..NO SOUL.
