Two Light Outdoor Fixture
Outdoor light fixture keeps blowing bulbs?
I have two outdoor light fixtures outside of my front door. For some reason both fixtures keep blowing the bulbs after about a day or so. I will admit that the fixtures say that the maximum wattage is 45 I believe and I just put 60's in them. Will incorrect wattage light bulbs cause the bulbs to blow. For some reason I'm thinking I have always had higher wattage bulbs in these fixtures and no problems, but maybe I'm mistaken. Maybe the cold temperature? I'm using 60w bug lights - ya know the yellow ones. Fixture rates for 40 watts max I believe (label is faded out)
It would surprise me greatly if your fixtures for outside lights were rated for anything less than 60 watts. It would not surprise me if one bulb blows after a day or so, but both? This is very unusual, but gives me an idea. Have an electrician check the voltage at the fixture. Even while other appliances in the house are turned on and off, check voltage the whole time. Does it fluctuate? Voltage should not fluctuate more than a couple of volts. If so, have an electrician check and tighten all neutral connections at the main panel. After tightening the neutral connections, does the voltage still fluctuate at the light fixtures? If so, call the power company. They are very familiar with the problem of loose neutrals causing voltage problems. The first symptom is bulbs blowing. The next thing that can happen is appliances can be damaged. This can become very costly.
Another thing is, if the voltage is high everywhere in the home, something like 125 each leg to neutral and 250 leg to leg, you can buy bulbs rated for 130 volts. They are more expensive, but will be worth it. If voltage is any higher than this, call the power company and ask them if they can change the tap settings on the transformer to lower your voltage.
You also might try the Compact Fluorescent Bulbs. They can stand the highter voltage, will save energy, and last about 10 times longer. The only thing is I am unaware of them being available as yellow bug lights. I simply don't know the answer to that one.
