How To Choose Between A Laser Comb And An Overhead Home Laser
Laser Comb and Home Laser are the two most popular options for Laser light hair therapy - an option for those who don't want to or unable to take medications. "Lasers can undoubtedly encourage hair growth", says Dr. Marc Avram, a clinical associate professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City.
Though laser therapy for hair is less expensive than hair transplant, it is quite costly. Generally, a laser comb costs US$470 and an overhead home laser costs US$549. In terms of money, your investment would be similar either you go for a laser comb or an overhead laser unit. But do they deliver the same results? Let's take a look at some of the facts about laser light hair therapy.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
This is the new generation of laser hair therapy. Low level lasers are referred to as "cold" lasers because they do not release energy in the form of heat. LLLT is delivered by a device that contains panels of lasers that shine on the scalp.
How Does Low Level Laser Therapy Work?
There are theories on how low level laser works. Soft tissue and fluids in our bodies vibrate at a similar frequency to that of cold-beam, red-light laser. One of many scientific theories is that cells are largely dependant for healthy function on an exchange of energy and 'information' with surrounding cells. This is achieved via individual wave systems by which cells 'communicate' through inter-connective plasma. A cell is in an unhealthy state when its vibrations become irregular or out-of-step with this common communications system. However, it may be brought back into harmony by being irradiated with low level laser working at quantum level.
To avoid scientific jargons, let's explain this with simple terms. The laser energy is simply absorbed by the hair follicle, and this stimulates the hair growth. Basically it says you're absorbing light energy into the scalp, thus causing the hair to grow.
It's thought to be similar to a plant growing by absorbing sunlight. Though this might not be a comprehensive answer, but it sure sounds good.
Laser Comb vs Overhead Home Laser
Choosing between a laser comb and an overhead home laser is not only a personal preference. There are practical reasons that you should opt for an overhead home laser.
- A laser comb has 9 beams of laser. An overhead home laser unit has 50.
- Using a laser comb, you need to raise your arm and move the device around your scalp for a period of 30 minutes. For an overhead home laser, you just sit under the device and let the lasers do their work.
- As you have to move the laser comb around, the amount of laser that your scalp received is actually quite uneven. An overhead unit will assure that each inch of your scalp has a full exposure of 30 minutes.
- It is boring and tiring to raise and move your arm for 30 minutes. While using an overhead unit, you can do reading, knitting, or go internet during the process.
- Laser comb do have the advantage of being compact and mobile. If you have to travel all the time or if your hair loss area is not big, then using a laser comb is more preferable.
