How Do You Get Lice And What Can You Do to Prevent It From Happening
If you want to know how you get lice, then you need to learn a little about them. Lice are parasitic blood suckers which reproduce at an astounding rate by attaching themselves to human hair and the scalp of their host, feeding on blood, which is their main source of survival. They are extremely contagious and have been categorized as a medical condition. Within their short lifespan, which on an average is around four weeks, they can cause great havoc for their hosts.
The female louse lays a nit or an egg which is the first stage of a louse. These nits hatch into nymphs. After molting three times, these nymphs emerge as an imago or adult louse. Only imagoes can reproduce, and they copulate often hoping to spread more lice onto their hosts' scalp.
You've got to give them credit for one thing though. These smart parasites love a clean scalp since there is no dirt to obstruct their feeding. Many people are under the impression that lice breed faster if your head is dirty or unwashed; when in fact it is quite the opposite. This does not mean that you do not wash your hair. A good shampooing once or twice a week should do.
The symptoms you can expect as a reaction to the lice bites and the saliva they inject into the skin to prevent the blood from clotting while feeding, are severe itchiness and because of constant scratching, the scalp develops red blotches or welts. Lice do not like light. They love the dark areas and burrow themselves deep into the scalp even when they are not feeding on blood. Another favorite hangout is behind the ears and the nape of the neck.
An innocent victim may contract lice from an infected person as these highly contagious parasites can transfer themselves from one host to another through direct contact even though they do not have wings to fly or long legs to jump. This hair to hair contact occurs in the sharing of most household items like sharing the same pillows, towels, combs, blankets and clothing of the infected person. The victim can also get head lice by using the same cap or hat used by the infected person. Before using hair accessories check thoroughly for lice. Shirt collars and collars of dresses are to be checked too.
There's a lot of treatments you can use from how without having to see a doctor, but if you fail to get rid of the lice, it is recommended you take your child a physician to seek medical help. Since lice are extremely contagious, the other family members in your household should be checked as well.
Once you are sure that your child is louse free, get your house sanitized to make sure that lice don't come back. You will need to clean all pillows, pillowcases, blankets, counter panes, beds, bed sheets, couches and their covers, clothes, hair clips and accessories, brushes, combs, hats, caps, scarves, chairs, etc. Those are some of the most common places where lice hide. You just need to use common sense when you're trying to rid your house of these pests.
