How to stop a dog with a compulsion for chasing lights?
We have a 4 year old cane corso who's pervious owner tormented him with a red laser light when he was young, He will totally zone and chase light flickers coming in windows, candle light on the ceiling and dont dare turn on a flashlight, he knows what they are. Even taking him in the car at night with the streetlights shinning in is hard. Any ideas how to get him over this obession
For both light chasing and shadow dancing I follow the same practice with regard to fixing this behavioural 'glitch.'
The first step is to rule out that your dog is at risk for epilepsy. A trip to your vet for an evaluation is needed. Once we are reasonably confident that he's healthy, we can proceed.
When otherwise healthy dogs are presented to us with this 'problem' behaviour, we have no problem in contracting to provide a solution that can be easily managed and reinforced by the dog's owner. Once done, those moving lights will actually serve to motivate the newly trained behaviour of not chasing them.
And guess what ... this isn't even considered to be any additional level of training and is included in the novice level obedience course. So start shopping for a qualified instructor or trainer and get this problem behind you.
