How to cure a blind kitten?
My kitten is almost 8 weeks now. When he was 4 weeks, an adult male came into my house and bite him (his mother was not around). He almost died in the attack but luckily he survived when I took him to the vet. His head skeleton has a swolen and it seems that it is cracked. The vet couldn't tell me if it does. However, he is okay now.
The problem is he couldn't see now. His eyes is alright and functions as normal as other cats. His inner eyes (I mean the black part of the eyes that moves which stay in the middle), can still grows big or small when (assuming that) he is trying to focus on something.
However, he gives almost no reaction when a torch light is pointed directly into his eyes. His left eyes has some minor reaction but not the right. The vet told me that the adult male that bit him might have caused infection to his eyes. I was told to drop two or three drops of cod liver oil into his eyes.
I did what was told but it never improves.
Any advice? Thanks
If the vet doesn't have a solution for the blindness there may not be a cure. Did the vet recommend Tobramycin (a prescription antibiotic eye drop) for the possible infection? It would seem like the normal course of action.
Please avoid shining bright lights in his eyes. If the damage was retinal this will not help. He may have partial vision, so try to protect what he may have.
I met a profoundly blind cat who functions quite well. She navigates a room by following walls with her whiskers. Try to keep kitty's food, bed and litter box near walls where he will be able to find them easily. Provide him with some stationary toys. Regular toys are fine as well, as finding them will motivate him to move around. Try not to make radical changes to his environment so he does not need to completely re-learn his way around every day.
