What resistor do i use on a LED light?
I have a 6volt battery pack
and a "5mm Super Bright White light LED 8,000 mcd (typ) - 9,500 mcd (max)"
the LED uses 3.6~4.0volts DC @ 30mA
i need to know what resistor to put onto the circuit so i dont blow the LED
and if you could tell me how you figured it out that would be great
You need to limit the current so it can't exceed the LED current limit. If you subtract the LED voltage drop from the battery voltage, 6 volts - 4 volts = 2 volts. This is the voltage you need to do the current limiting on. Use 25 mA for your current. There's no point in maxing out the LED. 2 volts / 25 mA equals 80 ohms. This isn't a standard resistor value so use the next higher standard value. This is 82 ohms. Put an 82 ohm resistor in series with your LED and it should work fine. You can do this with any battery voltage and and LED voltage drop. Just take the remaining voltage and divide by the current to get the resistor value. Choose the next higher standard resistor value.
