Small Hand Torch
What is cheaper to manufacture?
You have a small, (fits in the palm of your hand) torch. Roughly cuboid, made of plastic. You want to add a grip to it so it is easier to hang on to.
Would it be cheaper to add rubber bits down the side like in many such sized electronic devices, or would it be cheaper to simply cut grooves into the plastic?
Is there something else I should be considering with regards to grip?
Are there any better ideas?

Cutting into the plastic will requires thicker plastic to maintain strength. Machining will also produce swarf. swarf can be difficult to recycle, but dependant on the plastic it could perhaps be done. Might be easier/cheaper to cast the groves into the plastic casting.
Rubber grips probably cheaper option, because assembly tends to be cheaper than machining. Rubber usually allows better grip than groves.
Have you thought about using a strap which can be looped around the hand? Means grip doesn't have to be maintained to prevent the device dropping away from the hand.
